Sandals on Capri–A Fun Shopping Tradition

My new sandals!
My new sandals!

When in Capri, buy sandals! Every time I visit the beautiful island of Capri, my first stop is Il Sandalo Caprese in Anacapri.  I look forward to seeing Salvatore, the artisan who creates this special footwear.  Some very famous women have worn these unique Capri sandals: Jackie Onassis, Audrey Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot, Sophia Loren, among others! I believe this is a spot that should not be missed.

Making Sandals

There are so many styles from which to choose.  First, you select the soles, either flat or heeled.  The sizes are European but can be easily converted into the US or other international sizes.  Then, you choose the style of the upper. There are many different designs, ranging from thin or thick straps, in traditional leather or suede (in autumn), or with sparkly Swarovski crystals. Next, you decide on the color that you want. Decisions, decisions!

Then the most difficult part comes– you wait! And leave the rest to the expertise of Salvatore. He will transform your choices into a one-of-a-kind creation.

It takes a little time to make each pair; that’s why I make a beeline to handpick my new footwear first and then go sightseeing after. By the time you’ve finished exploring beautiful Anacapri, your sandals should be ready.

Luckily, there are many wonderful sights to explore in this charming commune: Monte Solaro, take a ride on the chairlift for a panoramic view; Chiesa San Michele to see the majolica-tiled church; Villa Michele, a view to life on the island. There are other shops where you can find cool linen clothing, bright ceramics, and souvenirs. Don’t forget to stop by one of the many cafes or restaurants to have a Caprese salad, an espresso, a gelato, or a refreshing limoncello made from the special local lemons.
